Two weeks before the ride, the camp and vetting area were part of the French Broad River -- for an unprecedented second time in a year. We decided that ponchos would once again be the welcome gifts. It did not work as well as 2018, but we did avoid a full flood.
We had had practically a full week of drying, so access was straightforward. Friday the weather was nearly ideal -- upper 70s with a passing afternoon shower (being in the mountains, some rain is almost mandated). Saturday, the weather held during the morning, although it got increasingly threatening. Then in the afternoon, we started intermittent showers and rain that continued through the night. But the riders and horses came through smiling and looking good.
Thanks to Biltmore Estate, Biltmore Equestrian Center, trailmaster Stagg Newman, and our team of pre-riding volunteers, trails were practically free from briars, well-marked, de-treed where trees had fallen over the winter months, repaired from the floods, re-routed as needed to avoid new farm fencing, and other routine maintenance.
Over the two days, 227 riders took to the trails. Riders came from the USA (including Guam), Canada, Australia, Bermuda, Colombia, Ecuador, Republic of South Africa, Czech Republic, and Great Britain to participate. The USA selection team was on hand to observe as the 2* YJ ride was a selection trial for the Young Rider team going to Italy later this year.
With fewer riders than in recent years, it almost seemed as if the camp had elbow room. And the riders and crews brought a positive attitude. We, of course, used the 'overflow' campgrounds this year, but the amenities in the overflow actually were better than the main camp.
Of special note, two riders completed the combination of 50 and 55 miles on Friday and Saturday riding the same horse:

A selection of follow-ups:
1. Two folks (one rider and one crew) went to the hospital and were released. The rider was a metabolic issue, the crew was a colic.
2. A few horses were treated at the ride site and recovered well before ride end.
Results have been submitted to AERC, AHA, and FEI and are on-line.
3. Refunds if applicable:
Please look for any general refund around the end of May. The process: post-ride Cheryl assembles the data for refunds (two days of work). These were sent to BEC on Wednesday night, 9 May. BEC checks them over for bloopers (which have been known to happen). After checking it goes to Biltmore Estate accounting for further checking then check issuance, then Post Office. If you are getting a snail mail refund, please bug Cheryl if you don't have it by end of May.
4. thanks for your understanding about parking:
This year we continued to work at enforcing 'rational' parking (mind you, I am not sure such a thing exists) as outlined after 2016. And I think in general it helped. We demanded no extended or prolonged saving of places, and I think everyone appreciated that. Folks coming with their travel-trailer (living quarters only), taking up horse trailer spaces were moved to overflow.

The limited distance ride, 25 miles on Friday, started 53 riders, of whom 14 were non-AERC members, and by inference, newer to the sport. The riders did an admirable job as reflected in the 83% completion rate. Completion awards were Biltmore-logoed(Biltmore XXVI) wood-backed horse brushes sponsored by Biltmore Equestrian Center and Ken Wilson Ford.

Mark Reader continued a winning trend, coming in first on his Bar Dancer, in a ride time of 2:55:50. About one minute later, Talissa Ralph's Nova Vida pulsed in, getting second. Third place went to Melissa Hamilton on Indabah, a few minutes later. First to finish won a matted and framed photo print of Nancy MacDonald's outstanding mountains at sunset. Second won a coffee table quality book on the Biltmore Estate. Third won a hand-crafted bottle opener from Mountain Farrier. Top ten awards were Biltmore Challenge labeled bottles of wine from Biltmore Winery donated by Biltmore Equestrian Center. Eight horses stood for Best Conditioned, which was won by Melissa Hamilton on Indabah, receiving an embroidered rain sheet. High vet score went to Talissa Ralph, receiving a hand-forged horseshoe-embedded-in-a-heart trivet crafted by Mountain Farriers. The BC score was an impressive 756. Eleventh place was Keith Galloway (time of 3:33:09) on Leigh Ann Pauley's LA Steeleman who won a book on distance riding by Donna Snyder-Smith donated by Running Bear. Two juniors entered the ride and both completed. First junior was Faye Wilkie on Sonatina in 4:27:40. They won a portrait from on-trail done by Becky Pearman. Second junior was Rowan Gaddis on Dakota in 4:31:03. They won a sponge. |

Five teams formed for the 25-mile team competition, with all (!) completing the requisite 3 out of 4. The times of the fastest three riders out of three or four counted. While the primary sponsor of the team awards was Boys Arnold Wealth Management, Riding Warehouse rounded things out, and with buttons supplied by Teddy Lancaster of Running Bear.
The Biltmore Gate Crashers took the blue, with Talissa Ralph, Elizabeth Galloway, Megan Hruska, and Stephanie Wanicka posting a combined time of 9:37:54. They won large, Red Gorilla flexible buckets donated by Boys Arnold and Running Bear's buttons. Team Awesome-Sauce came in second, comprised of Melissa Hamilton, Kelsey Eliot, Geneva McNamara, and Amy Dedafoe. Their combined time of 10:57:04 won them smaller, Red Gorilla flexible buckets donated by Boys Arnold and Running Bear's buttons. We had a dramatic 4-way declared tie for first place among
Kate Bishop on Lisa Green's LR April Breeze,
Tom Hagis on Indian Reinman,

in 6:01:31. As announced pre-ride, this was fine for AERC, but prizes must be decided among the winners. So the first three place prizes were shared out: a lovely hand-crafted wood saddle rack donated by Cox Builders, a coffee table quality book on the Biltmore Estate, and a sweat scraper. Top ten awards were Biltmore Challenge labeled bottles of wine from Biltmore Winery donated by Biltmore Equestrian Center.
Five horses stood for Best Conditioned, with Cheryl van Deusen's Snake Eyes Leroy winning an embroidered rain sheet with a score of 745. High vet score was tied between Snake Eyes Leroy and LR April Breeze ridden by Kate Bishop. The prize, split between them, was four horse-themed mugs donated by Susan Wilson.
Eleventh place was Eone Willemse on Valerie Kanavy's Cruzin' for Gold in a ride time of 7:24:47. They won a $25 gift certificate from Riding Warehouse. Three juniors started the ride, with all three completing. The first junior, Laney Jarrett on her Pimpin, finished in 8:54:57, winning a won a portrait from on-trail done by Becky Pearman. Second junior was Lauren Dodds on Malik Farouk in 9:06:00, winning a lead rope. Third junior was Katie Bumgarner on Mary Farris' Mojo in a ride time of 9:42:58, winning a sponge. Middle of the pack award was a full year equestrian pass to the Biltmore Estate, entitling the winner to access to the grounds, house, and trails of the Estate for a year; donated by Biltmore Equestrian Center. Friday FEI CEI 1* 80 km / 50-Mile Results:
Eleven horses and riders started the FEI CEI 1* senior division ride, and eight completed. One rider entered the Young Rider CEI 1* division and completed. Cheryl van Deusen won the division on her Snake Eyes Leroy in 6:01:31. Second was Valerie Kanavy on her Fine Cut Gold, in a ride time of 7:00:43. Third FEI went to Eone Willemse from Republic of South Africa on Valerie Kanavy's Cruzin' for Gold in 7:24:47. For the FEI 1* win, Cheryl got a gift certificate from Platinum Performance donated by Platinum.

First (and only) FEY 1* YJ rider on Friday was Kate Bishop on Lisa Green's LR April Breeze in a ride time of 6:01:31. She won a gift certificate for Platinum Performance donated by Platinum. They also won FEI YJ BC, getting a flake bag.

Team names are worth recounting (though some of them were invented by management): Mane Attraction, Unimaginatives, Its a Guy/Gal Thing, Goethe Gals, Crocodile Dundee and the Sheilas, Canby Cruizers, Three and a Half Horses, Two Greys and a Bay....
The winning team was the Mane Attraction, comprised of Kate Bishop, Cheryl van Deusen, Katie Bumgarner, and Mary Farris, who posted a combined ride time of 21:46. They won large, Red Gorilla flexible buckets donated by Boys Arnold and Running Bear's buttons. Second place team was the Unimaginatives, who combined times from Tracy Benedict, Claire Godwin, Claude Brewer and Clare Summers of 22:16:36. They won smaller, Red Gorilla flexible buckets donated by Boys Arnold and Running Bear's buttons. Its a Guy/Gal Thing, with the combination of Tom Hagis, Nolan Whitesell, Sally Jellison and Tom Rajala, posted a combined best-three time of 22:21:18 to win $10 gift certificates from Riding Warehouse and buttons from Running Bear.

Saturday AERC 30-Mile Results:
Saturday's limited distance ride, 30 miles long, started 50 riders, completing 30, for a 75% completion rate. Completion awards were Biltmore-logoed (Biltmore XXVI) wood-backed horse brushes sponsored by Biltmore Equestrian Center and Ken Wilson Ford.
Once again, Mark Reader ran away with it, winning the 30-mile ride on Zells Niner in 3:23:34. Jill Gregorieff on Domino's Wildflower came in second in 4:05:28, taking home a coffee table quality book on the Biltmore Estate. Saturday FEI CEI 1* 88 km / 55-Mile Results:
Five riders entered the Saturday FEI CEI 1* 88 km senior division ride with three completing. No one entered the 1* YJ event. Bob Gielen (Canada) and his MoreBangforYourBuck won handily in 6:21:04. Second was Clarke Martin (USA) on Marcia Weilbach's DCL Mooi Penny in a time of 7:22:43. Third place was Hilda Donahue (Ireland) on her Skys Sahalie in a time of 7:25:37. For FEI first to finish, Bob won a gift certificate for Platinum Performance donated by Platinum.
All three horses had top-tenned the open 55, and all stood for best conditioned, which Bob Gielen's MoreBangforYourBuck won. For FEI BC, they won a turquoise-and-lime-colored beta headstall donated by Distance Depot.

Rae Shumate-Tysor (GA) won the 75-mile ride on her DM Michaelangelo in a ride time of 8:58:16. She was followed almost instantly by Kimberly Loutzenheiser on Marcia Weilbach's Shahqueem (8:58:17). Third across the line were Hanna Weightmann on Valerie Kanavy's Dude Free Gold (9:07:01). First to finish won a pottery platter crafted by Marbie Kollath with Biltmore Challenge running horses. Second place received a coffee-table quality book on the Biltmore Estate. Third place got a breakaway halter.Top ten awards were Biltmore Challenge labeled bottles of wine from Biltmore Winery donated by Biltmore Equestrian Center. Six horses stood for Best Conditioned, with Rae Shumate-Tysor's DM Michaelangelo taking the prize with a score of 736. He won an embroidered rain sheet. Eight riders representing four countries entered the Saturday FEI CEI 2* 120 km senior division ride with seven completing. Rae Shumate-Tysor (USA) on her DM Michaelangelo won the senior division in 8:58:16. Second place in the senior division was Nathalie Weemaels (ECU) on her Box Bruma in 9:56:32. Third was Daniel Vasquez on Carlos Lleras' Play It Louder in 10:26:59. For the FEI senior division win, Rae got a gift certificate for Platinum Performance donated by Platinum. And of course buttons supplied by Teddy Lancaster of Running Bear. Awesome Sauce, CAN - AM, InItToWinIt, It Is What It Is !!!, Dream Team, and Coming Together contended for the team awards. All six teams completed the requisite three out of four riders.
Coming Together won the team competition, with It Is What It Is !!! coming second, and InItToWinIt finishing third. The Coming Together team included Hanna Weightman, Nathalie Weemaels, Marcelina Sosnoska on Carlos Lleras' Amir El Arab AT, and Daniel Vasquez with the best-three time of 29:30:32. They won hand-knotted halters donated by Five Penny Tack and Running Bear's buttons. Kate Bishop, Vance Stine on I Mak, Edward Gurley on Derbraso Haze, and Sarah Buckley on Khomets Boss Hoss comprised InItToWinIt. Their best-three time was 33:52:29. Their third place finish earned them the smaller, Red Gorilla flexible buckets donated by Boys Arnold and Running Bear's buttons.

Saturday AERC 100-Mile Results:
We had 22 start the 100-mile ride, with 12 finishers, for a 54% completion rate. Completion awards were Biltmore-logoed (Biltmore XXVI) wood-backed horse brushes sponsored by Biltmore Equestrian Center and Ken Wilson Ford.

Sudi Lenhart (TN) on Wiebow and Cindy Young (KY) on KC Lucks Lil Buck tied for the win in 14:18:17, sharing a major happy-dance at the awards ceremony. Cindy Young took home the pre-arranged first prize, a pottery platter crafted by Marbie Kollath with Biltmore Challenge running horses. Sudi Lenhart took a hand-crafted tile from Nan Jacobsohn (with plaque to follow). Riding solo, Nicki Meuten (VA) came in about 45 minutes later on her FYF Dutch (15:01:08), winning a breakaway halter.Top ten awards were Biltmore Challenge labeled bottles of wine from Biltmore Winery donated by Biltmore Equestrian Center. |
Three horses stood for Best Conditioned, which was won by Cindy Young's KC Lucks Lil Buck with a score of 680, outstanding under the tough ride conditions of slick trail and rain. They won an embroidered rain sheet. Meg Sleeper's Syrocco Madrigal, who had finished in a four-way tie for fourth in a ride time of 15:57:13, had high vet score, and received a full-color Biltmore House throw donated by Bitlmore Equestrian Center.
Eleventh place was Cheryl van Deusen on Spotless Summer Magic in a ride time of 20:16:45. They received a $25 gift certificate from Riding Warehouse.
Middle of the Pack went to Meg Sleeper (15:57:13). They won a full year equestrian pass to the Biltmore Estate, entitling the winner to access to the grounds, house, and trails of the Estate for a year; donated by the Biltmore Equestrian Center.
Back of the Pack went to Carmine Villani on Cheryl van Deusen's Ebs Regal Majjaan with time of 20:17:01. They won a gift certificate for Platinum Performance donated by Platinum.

Saturday FEI CEI 3* 160 km / 100-Mile Results:
Six riders entered the FEI CEI 3* 160 km senior ride with four finishing. Four entrants were from the USA, one from Great Britain, and one from Republic of South Africa. No one entered the 3* YJ ride.

FEI does not accept ties, so the AERC tie for fourth place was broken -- Meg Sleeper on Syrocco Madrigal (15:57:13) edging Steve Rojek on Tribune. Third to finish the 3* FEI event was Cheryl van Deusen on Spotless Summer Magic (20:16:45) finishing just ahead of Carmine Villani (GBR) on Cheryl van Deusen's Ebs Regal Majjaan (20:17:01). For first to finish the 3*, Meg got a gift certificate for Platinum Performance donated by Platinum. Saturday AHA Region XII 100-Mile Championship Results:
The Biltmore Challenge hosted the Arabian Horse Association (AHA) Region XII 100-Mile Championship for 2019. A total of 10 horse / riders out of the 22 starters both qualified and entered the event: six full Arabs, and four HalfArabs. Entry requirements included that, the rider and owner must be 2019 ‘Competition’ members of AHA and the horse must be AHA registered. Furthermore, as a Regional Championship ride, the horse must have a minimum of 100 lifetime miles of which 50 miles may be from an AHA Regional or National Competitive Trail Ride, but any other miles must be Endurance miles (not Limited Distance).

Reserve champion HalfArab was Wallace Hill Sundance owned Amy Wallace-Whelan and ridden by Annie Whelan, in a ride time of 15:57:13. Saturday 100-Mile Team Results:
For the teams, the times of the fastest three riders out of three or four count. While the primary sponsor of the team awards was Boys Arnold Wealth Management, Riding Warehouse rounded things out. And of course buttons supplied by Teddy Lancaster of Running Bear. Five teams were named, with two completing the requisite three out of four riders.
Teams included Sunshine & Rainbows, Ready to Ride, Late Comers, Here We Go Loop-Dee-Loo, and 3 Motherbuckers and a Spare. In a dramatic repeat (sort of) from 2018, the 3 Motherbuckers and a Spare won! This year's team saw the return of Cindy Young and Sudi Lenhart, with newcomers Steven Hay on Jane Rodrigue's Al Shama Shaazon and Marcy Gagnon on her CA Samuri. The best three time combined to be 44:43:37. They each won a pair of ice boots donated by Boys Arnold and Running Bear's buttons. Second place team was Here We Go Loop-Dee-Loo, with riders Lisa Delp on her Catch Me Ridin Dirty, Cheryl van Deusen, Carmine Villani, and Spencer McCleery on Steve Rojek's Roadrunner. Their best three of four riding time, 57:29:16, earned them each a rump rug donated by Riding Warehouse.

The Eastern Crabbet Arabian Horse Society sponsored a "Best Crabbet" horse award in each distance. ECAHS offered both Young Rider / Junior (YJ) and Senior divisions for this award. The horse must have been Crabbet-certified as having at least 25% Crabbet blood by April 27 (or shortly thereafter). For those owning Arabians and HalfArabians, this can provide some insight into the somewhat-arcane aspects of our horses' breeding. The awards are strikingly beautiful black/gray/gold neck ribbons.
