Overview

Overview:

Riders came ready to ride with fit horses.  Azalea and rhododendrens were peaking, and dogwoods were shedding the last of their blossoms.   (For a change) the weather was chilly on Friday -- good for horses, cold for crew; and Saturday was lovely for crew, and a bit warm for horses.  Hooray: rain-free.

Overall 276 rider-starts occurred over the two days of riding.  Somehow folks found parking (many thanks to stewards Jack Weber, John Proudman, Tim Clark for making that all as seamless as possible!).  Because we not only had the competitors horses, but also pre-ride horses and safety ride horses, plus a few others that were with stablemates for either companionship or simple trans-shipment to their ultimate destinations.   I hope everyone met and enjoyed at least one set of new riders and horses during their stay.

A selection of issues that arose:

1.  Gallop / trot / walk:
Riders have come forward asserting that John Petras did NOT gallop through the walk / trot area, based on riding with John. The further investigation leaves me with the impression that it is possible that John was inadvertently trotting through an area that was a short, newly-minted, walk stretch, and that he missed the Walk Only sign. (Anyone who has done endurance will know that that can happen). Thus, John’s results will be reinstated. Also, I had a total mind-lapse on the Sunday awards when I said that John was disqualified from Saturday. That was always wrong. So John is fully reinstated in the results on both days. This information will be put on the ride web site.

2.  With respect to the injured riders:
==>  Claire Godwin was released on Saturday from the hospital, and left for home early Sunday. I am sure we will be seeing her competing again soon.  As of 7 May, she is still a bit tender, but fully herself.
==>  Tessa Kimbler was treated for a badly sprained ankle and released on Saturday. Likely we will be seeing Tessa on a horse, possibly before she is walking fully well, but a full recovery is in the works.
==>  Natalie Taggart took quite literally a 'header' off her horse on an area that is nice footing, pretty level, and she was just trotting.  However, she suffered a severe concussion, and was taken to Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville.  They put her into intensive care in a medically induced coma.   The injury is very serious.   The hospital has done multiple diagnostics, and determined that the injury seems confined to the skull.   There are some small clots that appear to be dissolving.

-->  As of 7 May, she is off the coma-inducing drugs but they have aftermath impacts and it is unclear the extent of any long term damage.  She appears able to move her limbs, and is somewhat responsive to external stimuli.  She has been helped to sit up in a chair of of morning 7 May.

--> As of 8 May, she was moved from ICU to a more conventional hospital room.  She is getting her eyes open more and more.  She still has a trach-tube in place so cannot speak.  But she does squeeze a hand in hers in response to questions and the like.   Thus far, indications are positive.

-->  As of 12 May, Natalie is more able to breathe on her own.  The trach tube has been sealed, not removed yet.   They hope to remove it in the next several days if she continues to breathe well.  She is able to control her eyes better, and continues to improve steadily.   Sometime late this week if all goes well, she will go to a re-hab unit.

-->  As of 13 May, Natalie goes for a swallow test, and is able more frequently to speak spontaneously.  Her right side is not as able to function as prior.

-->  As of 14 May, Natalie passed the swallow test, the trach tube is removed, and she is eating solid food, and able to talk a bit.  The plan is for her to go to Care Partners rehab soon.

-->  As of 15 May, Natalie is in the Care Partners rehab unit, and able to have more visitors yet at the same time a more intense re-hab schedule.  Her right limbs are impaired in their movements still, but there is a perception of slow but steady improvement continuing.

-->  As of 19 May, Natalie is working pretty much all day at her re-hab, getting off for visiting from 5pm to 8pm when friends and family visit.  She has a good appetite, and is able to be 'with it' more and more as the post-concussion fog continues to dissipate.  They have her walking some with railings for support.  She is irked with the perceived slow progress, but recognizes the necessity of persisting.

--> As of 27 May, Natalie continues to improve.  She is able to walk with some assistance, and her right arm is coming along.  She is far more aware, and is putting together how the accident really happened and its aftermath.  And, perhaps best of all, she is looking forward to getting horses back in her life.

--> As of 7 June, (from Mike Bostic email): Great news! Natalie came home yesterday and is doing really well.  She is walking with out help and is in good spirits.  She is still having trouble with her right arm and hand and her memory is still not very good as she can not remember events a couple of weeks before the accident and her short term memory is still not very good.  All in all she has improved so much so quickly we are all feeling that she will continue to improve.  Her Mother is staying with her this week and I helped Shawn yesterday to rebuild her steps as she supervised the work.  It is nice to have her home!

If you have ever been concussed at all, you will be aware that recovery is not necessarily quick.  And this was a severe concussion.    I believe we are talking months of recovery, not days or even weeks.  Cheryl's corollary:  helmets are important -- please use them.

--> While I have occasionally asked since June, the reports have been of slow, but positive progress.  As of February 2016, Natalie has bought a new helmet, but not yet gotten back on a horse.  She is working.  Her music and dance skills are not back to 100% but still make progress.

3.  Horses treated at the ride site are recovering / fully recovered, including the one that went for colic surgery.

Results have been submitted to AERC, FEI, USEF and AHA, and so on.

Refunds if applicable:

1.  If you pre-ordered and pre-paid for the Saturday night burgers and dogs and got closed out when the burgers and dogs ran out and if you arrived for the meal before 6:30 pm (when service was scheduled to finish) please contact me by 14 May, and we will arrange a refund.  I am sorry about any starving crew and riders left unserved.

2.  Please look for any general refund around the end of May.  The process:  post-ride Cheryl assembles the data for refunds. As of 7 May, I expect to get to these tonight.  The data are sent to BEC for checking.  After checking it goes to Biltmore Estate accounting for further checking then check issuance, then Post Office.  If you are getting a snail mail refund, please bug Cheryl if you don't have it by end of May.

Saturday Team 100 Results:

7 teams were assembled in the 100 to compete for awards offered for the top three teams.  The times of the fastest three riders out of three or four counted. While the primary sponsor of the team awards was Teddy Lancaster of Running Bear, other prizes were donated by Dover Saddlery, the ride farrier Mountain Farriery Service / Jeff Pauley and the Newmans.

The first place team was "Ladies and Gents" consisting of Dom Freeman, Heather Reynolds, Robert Ribley and Kyle Gibbon.  Their combined best-three ride time was 38:00:02.  Their combined time won them medals donated by Teddy Lancaster of Running Bear, and two $20 gift certificates apiece ($40 net) donated by Dover Saddlery.  Second place in the team standings were the "Three Tiny Hineys Plus a Wide Load" team, comprised of Bonni Hannah, Becky Bunnell, Sudi Lenhart, and Mike Everett, finishing in a best-three time of 39:30:01.  This team won hand-forged horseshoe-handled hoof picks donated by Mountain Farrier Service / Jeff Pauley plus medals donated by Teddy Lancaster of Running Bear.    "Team Turtle" were the third place team with a best-three ride time of 47:03:00 turned in by Vance Stine, Hannah Burton, Kally Kuhler, and Vic Stine, winning hohrse body-sponges donated by the Newmans and medals donated by Teddy Lancaster of Running Bear.
